Elaine Neil Orr Interview
05.04.2014 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
DescriptionElaine Neil Orr talks about A Different Sun: A Novel Of Africa. The daughter of a pre-Civil War Southern slaveholder travels to Africa as the wife of a Baptist missionary to bring the gospel to the Yoruba people in what is now Nigeria. The irony of Americans from a region where millions of Africans were enslaved taking a liberating gospel message to their African cousins is a constant, but unspoken, backdrop to the story. How this idealistic couple struggles with an unfamiliar and punishing environment and with a culture totally foreign to them. This extraordinary situation challenges their marriage and their commitment to serve and evangelize peoples whose attitudes and spiritual backgrounds are so. Orr, herself the daughter of Baptist missionaries, uses her characters and setting to tell a richly complex tale filled with universal themes and conflicts.
Also airs Thursday, May 8, 5:00 pm.
