David is professor of English at Mount Olive College, and the author of 12 books of poetry, plus the forthcoming The Red Tower: New and Selected Poems. Previous winners of the Sam Ragan Award include Fred Chappell, Clyde Edgerton, Louis Rubin, and Betty Adcock.

In Dec 2009 Tony Brown's "The Tell-Tale Cadillac" was published in Righter Monthly Review, and he also received Honorable Mention in Writers' Digest for "The Quest" that month. In Sep 2009 his story "The New Wall On Rue de la Maison" was Honorable Mention in Writers' Journal.
