Welcome
Jim Sheedy is a technical writer with over 20 years of professional experience. He currently
specializes in designing and implementing dynamic Web sites for academic organizations and
small businesses. He also provides onsite writing training in technical and business writing.
Web Pages
With writing, database design, and programming skills, Jim can create, manage, and maintain your
Web site. He can
- Register a Domain Name for your site and associate that name with a
Domain Name Server (DNS).
- Configure your Web Hosting service. For example, set up email
accounts for your domain or activate password protection for select areas of the site.
- Design a database schema and dynamic web pages that can update and report on the data stored in the
database. Also generate dynamic content from online forms.
- Design and implement online forms. For example, set up online registration forms for website
users, and internal forms that staff can use to insert form information into an existing
database.
Writing Training
For over 10 years, Jim has been teaching technical and business writing for Duke University's
Office of Continuing Studies and the North Carolina Writers' Network. He offers the following
training services:
- Onsite writing workshops. Topics include writing software documentation,
procedural guides, reports, and proposals.
- A workshop on writing skills for work-related writing (he teaches this workshop
through the
Center for Business and Technical Writing,
a program of the North Carolina Writers' Network). The course covers the fundamentals
of effective communication: conciseness, word choice, grammar, punctuation, sentence and
paragraph structure, and more.
