Devastated by the loss of an adult son in 1985, the author, at age 53, accepts the invitation of a stranger to share his life for one year. With no prior sailing experience, she moves from the safety of her armchair beside the fire to a small Voyager 26 sailboat.
Readers share her voyage of self-discovery as she rises to face immediate and unexpected danger, describes life lived intimately with nature, and recounts the serenity of benign seas and secluded shores.Following a serendipitous telephone meeting, the two strangers find that setbacks and triumphs, affirmation and doubt accompany their voyage; while woven into the vivid picture of life afloat is the account of their growing relationship.
In this story of their journey, the author introduces the engaging single-hander who invites her into his life, offers her the opportunity to fulfill a lifelong dream, and ultimately asks her to be his wife. Finally, she shares with her readers the healing capacity of sea and sky, solitude and companionship, time and timelessness.
