Chatham County author Marjorie Hudson will read from and discuss her first work of fiction, Accidental Birds of the Carolinas, a short-story collection. What began as a short story about a Yankee lady searching for peace in a derelict farmhouse in North Carolina grew into a stunning collection about the human heart. The characters are both fresh and recognizable. The collection is populated by a New Age farmer making a perfect world for his Down syndrome son, a retired Army officer running to cure his broken heart, and a battered wife escaping to a mill town populated by three-legged dogs. Her collection was a Novello Literary Award Finalist, has received a 2012 SIBA nomination, and the title story garnered Hudson a coveted 2011-12 North Carolina Arts Council Fellowship.

Location: Catawba County Library, 115 West C Street (Newton)
