Near the End of the Rainy SeasonNear the End of the Rainy Season: Poems from Japan
by Nancy Corson Carter
Pudding House Publications (Columbus, Ohio)
ISBN 1-58998-677-6

$10

These poems began when my husband and I accompanied two good friends on their sentimental journey to Japan's central islands in the summer of l992. Because my father had gone (when I was an infant) to serve in the U.S. Army in World War II in Europe, not long after Pearl Harbor, I’d grown up with tangled feelings about Japan. The poems reflect that ambivalence (on both sides) and also the joy of finding moments of reconciliation through first-hand experience of Japanese culture as an adult.

I’m leaving in a just a short while for Mobile, Alabama, to show the Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance the outstanding books written by members of the NCWN. Before I leave, though, I had to share this bit of bad news that came my way: “Cindy Hamel, media escort in the Raleigh / Durham / Chapel Hill [...]
