Legal LiteracyTHE BUSINESS GUIDE TO LEGAL LITERACY: What Every Manager Should Know About the Law

By Hanna Hasl-Kelchner

Businesses that manage legal risk—rather than being managed by legal risk—will always have a leg up on the competition. Yet many managers still leave the law to lawyers, often to their detriment because understanding the legal aspects of business has become more important than ever.

In her breakthrough book THE BUSINESS GUIDE TO LEGAL LITERACY: What Every Manager Needs to Know About the Law (Jossey-Bass/A Wiley Imprint, April 2006, $29.95/Cloth) Hanna Hasl-Kelchner maintains that managers who understand the law are not only better equipped to stay out of potential legal quagmires, they’re also better able to wield the law to further their company’s interests. So what many business leaders might consider the enemy could actually become a useful friend. Just like the safety instructions on an airplane ensure that passengers have a safer and more relaxed flight, Hasl-Kelchner’s book helps managers and leading professionals to run their business more efficiently and successfully.

THE BUSINESS GUIDE TO LEGAL LITERACY is a groundbreaking must-read for managers and entrepreneurs, helping them to learn about the law before it is too late; to arm themselves against unnecessary and expensive mistakes; and to avoid wasting valuable time and money on finding solutions to legal problems. It is especially valuable to small businesses -- without corporate counsel -- that are often unfamiliar with the small but ever-so-important details of business law.

Hasl-Kelchner uses her expertise and experience in both the legal and business worlds and bridges the gap between law and business. The outcome is a truly unique book in which she translates legalese into language that makes business sense and provides accessible, practical and real-world advice for avoiding common legal mistakes and using the law as an indispensable business tool. THE BUSINESS GUIDE TO LEGAL LITERACY is easy to read and filled with dozens of examples. Hasl-Kelchner illustrates step-by-step how to avoid lawsuits and transform potential business legal problems into opportunities for building stronger business relationships, how to improve a business’ competitive advantage, and how to embed compliance into the corporate culture to achieve true organizational excellence. It concludes with an impressive appendix filled with must-have reference tools for any manager, including: a legal primer, lessons from Sarbanes-Oxley, and an inside look at the federal guidelines used by prosecutors to decide whether to criminally indict a company or its management.
