Plus Ernest is trying to train Sir Walter, the Scottish terrier puppy who is the newest addition to the family. But what if Sir Walter doesn’t want to be told what to do and decides that running wild like a fox sounds like lots of fun?
Joan Carris has published more than a dozen books for children. She also teaches graduate-level writing at Duke University. She lives in Beaufort, North Carolina.

Bravo, Nancy
Congratulations to the Network’s good friend Nancy Olson, owner of Raleigh’s Quail Ridge Books & Music, who will receive a 2010 Raleigh Medal of the Arts in a ceremony on October 6. Nancy has done as much for North Carolina’s writers, and North Carolina’s literary culture, as anyone, and this honor is well-deserved.

| ...to poet Nancy Simpson Brantley. Her poem, " In the Nantalala Gorge" was published at Pisgah Review, edited by Jubal Tiner. Her poems "Bus Duty" and "In Room Nine" published at Solo Cafe in California, edited by guest poet Lenard D. Moore. At the recent American Writing Programs Conference in Chicago, two important poetry collections were presented: The 50th Anniversary Issue of Southern Poetry Review. Nancy Simpson's poem, "Grass" was reprinted. Anhinga Press unveiled THE POETS GUIDE TO THE BIRDS edited by Judith Kitchen and Ted Kooser in which Nancy Simpson's new poem, "Carolina Blue Birds" was included. |
