The Salem College Center for Women Writers is excited about our now expanded International Literary Awards in fiction, nonfiction and poetry! The Reynolds Price Short Fiction Award for a short story up to 5,000 words will be judged by John McNally; the Penelope Niven Creative Nonfiction Award for a work of creative nonfiction (including personal essay and memoir) up to 5,000 words will be judged by Jennifer Niven; and the Rita Dove Poetry Award for a poem of any style up to 100 lines (up to 2 poems per submission) will be judged by Molly Peacock. The awards are open to both women and men who write in English excluding current Salem employees and students. The postmark deadline is February 2, 2009. The winner in each genre will receive $1,200; the two honorable mentions in each genre will receive $150. For complete details, visit: www.salem.edu/go/cww/ or e-mail

Congratulations to the Network’s good friend Nancy Olson, owner of Raleigh’s Quail Ridge Books & Music, who will receive a 2010 Raleigh Medal of the Arts in a ceremony on October 6. Nancy has done as much for North Carolina’s writers, and North Carolina’s literary culture, as anyone, and this honor is well-deserved.
