In lieu of the newspapers cutting both their staffs and book review pages, libraries are stepping in to fill the void, and we thought to offer a special invitation to members of the North Carolina Writers Network, especially to new authors who are trying to get their works reviewed. Booklove (http://booklove.wordpress.com/) is the brainchild of Mary Gomez, Technical Services Librarian at Rockingham Community College, who has created a blog for people who love to read and discuss books. This is a very informal blog that operates like a book club in promoting discussions and ideas on both fiction and non-fiction works. There are three people who are involved in writing reviews for Booklove with the following pseudonyms: Mary Gomez (booklove); Teresa Frohock (Book Dragon); and Michael Rose (allTheWayFromLongview). We have had positive responses to our reviews and some lively discussions. While comments come from all over the world, this is an exclusive blog and reviewers are allowed to submit by invitation only to ensure the quality of reviews. Between the three of us, we have very diverse reading habits and will entertain works of fiction or non-fiction, but we currently have no one who will review poetry. If you would like for one of our reviewers to consider your work for Booklove, please send the item to: Booklove, Gerald B. James Library, P.O. Box 38, Wentworth, NC 27375-0038; however, we will not be able to return your book to you. Please note that you are a member of the North Carolina Writers Network so that we can note in our review that you are a North Carolina author.

M-V-P! M-V-P!
In his latest Musings post, Scott Owens heaps praise on the invaluable Glenda Beall, and I couldn’t agree more.

Bravo, Nancy
Congratulations to the Network’s good friend Nancy Olson, owner of Raleigh’s Quail Ridge Books & Music, who will receive a 2010 Raleigh Medal of the Arts in a ceremony on October 6. Nancy has done as much for North Carolina’s writers, and North Carolina’s literary culture, as anyone, and this honor is well-deserved.
