Session III/IV, 2:00 - 4:00 pm

POETRY: Writing Poetic Sequences, with James Applewhite

The "poetic sequence" is a deliberately patterned grouping of poems, held together by theme, style, or time. Models for the poetic sequence abound: W.B. Yeats' "Meditations in Time of Civil War" and Rita Dove's "Thomas and Beulah" are examples. Master poet James Applewhite will help you generate a plan for creating your own poetic sequences.

James Applewhite is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and the Jean Stein Award in Poetry from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and teaches creative writing and literature at Duke University. He is author of 11 books of poems, most recently Selected Poems (8 volumes, Duke University Press). A new book, A Diary of Altered Light, is scheduled for release in Spring 2006 from LSU Press.
