O’Connor and McCullough

I never trust admonitions about “how to be a writer”: “If you want to be a writer, you must . . .”; “A real writer should . . .”  Really, all you have to do to be a writer is write; all you should do to be a writer is work really, really hard at [...]

Congratulations are in order . . .

. . . to Raleigh dramatist Ian Finley, who has been named the 2012 Piedmont Laureate for the Triangle and adjacent counties: “Working primarily with Burning Coal Theatre Company, he has brought more than 70 different stories from the area’s history to life on stage through collaborations with Oakwood Cemetery, the Mordecai House, Raleigh City [...]

The Writingest State, indeed

Let’s put it this way: in 1922, no one had heard of Thomas Wolfe, William Faulkner, or the Fugitive poets. Yet down in little ol’ Charlotte (a city that was, in fact, little in 1922), a group of writers came together to form the Charlotte Writers’ Club, which will celebrate its 90th Anniversary this year. Lit Mags that Pay

Congress will vote on these proposals in December. Here what’s being proposed: Cuts in funding for nonprofit service providers. Other cuts that will create gaps [...]

From the North Carolina Literary Review: “The North Carolina Literary Review (NCLR) publishes poetry, fiction, and nonfiction by and interviews with North Carolina writers, and articles and essays about North Carolina writers, literature, and literary history and culture. Sad News from Salisbury

We’re very sad to hear that journalist Rose Post passed away today. Becoming the namesake of the Network’s creative nonfiction contest was the least of Ms. Post’s honors and accomplishments, but we are grateful and humbled, nonetheless, to remember Ms. Post and her work each year.

Still More Hotel Rooms for Fall Conference

The good folks at the DoubleTree Hotel in Asheville, hosts of our 2011 Fall Conference, have just added 20 more rooms to our conference block for both Friday and Saturday nights, November 18 and 19.  They have also added 7 rooms each night to our block at the adjacent Sleep Inn. The deadline is October [...]
