Take Action Now

I received this late yesterday from the North Carolina Center for Nonprofits:   “Collectively, nonprofits have lifted our unified voice to protect charitable giving. This week, the N.C. Center for Nonprofits proudly joined with nearly 4,000 nonprofits from across America – including 352 from North Carolina – in urging a Congressional Super Committee to protect […]

Protect Donations to Nonprofits

I received this today from the North Carolina Center for Nonprofits: “Next month, a Congressional Super Committee will recommend significant spending cuts and tax changes to reduce the federal deficit. Congress will vote on these proposals in December. Here what’s being proposed: Cuts in funding for nonprofit service providers. Other cuts that will create gaps […]

Fall Conference Scholarships

Friday, October 28, is the deadline to submit scholarship requests for the 2011 Fall Conference, including requests for Mary Belle Campbell Scholarships.  Please submit your current CV or resume, as well as a one-page statement of writing intent that describes your experience and goals as a writer, to Ed Southern at ed@ncwriters.org to be considered.  […]

From the North Carolina Literary Review: “The North Carolina Literary Review (NCLR) publishes poetry, fiction, and nonfiction by and interviews with North Carolina writers, and articles and essays about North Carolina writers, literature, and literary history and culture. We have a special offer available to attendees of the North Carolina Writers’ Network 2011 Fall Conference. […]

Sad News from Salisbury

We’re very sad to hear that journalist Rose Post passed away today. Becoming the namesake of the Network’s creative nonfiction contest was the least of Ms. Post’s honors and accomplishments, but we are grateful and humbled, nonetheless, to remember Ms. Post and her work each year.

Still More Hotel Rooms for Fall Conference

The good folks at the DoubleTree Hotel in Asheville, hosts of our 2011 Fall Conference, have just added 20 more rooms to our conference block for both Friday and Saturday nights, November 18 and 19.  They have also added 7 rooms each night to our block at the adjacent Sleep Inn. The deadline is October […]

NCAC Director Announces Retirement

We received the following announcement yesterday from the North Carolina Arts Council.  Under Mary’s direction, the NCAC has been one of the Network’s best friends and staunchest supporters.  We wish Mary a long and fulfilling retirement, and thank her for her great service to the state. Dear Colleagues, On March 1, I will retire from […]

Southern Fictions/Southern Identities this Sunday

When I took this job, I was pretty confident in my ability to perform most every task the Network would need its director to do – except for one.  And that one is, for a nonprofit, kind of a biggie. I sincerely dislike asking for money, known in the nonprofit world as fundraising.  I am […]

Hotel Rooms for NCWN Fall Conference

I heard from a couple of members yesterday who said they’d tried to reserve a room at the DoubleTree Hotel for the 2011 Fall Conference, but were told that the Network’s room block was full. The room block was, indeed, full, but I spoke to the DoubleTree yesterday and they have agreed to add some […]
