Shibori Blue: Thirty-six Views of The Peak is a collection of color photographs and poems celebrating The Peak, an “unsung mountain of gneiss and amphibolite” in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Using Japanese artist Hokusai’s thirty-six prints of Mount Fuji as inspiration, Copeland selected thirty-six photographs of The Peak she took from 2019-2023 and paired them with her poems. The poems offer meditations on nature and prayers for serenity and peace.

Beth Copeland is the author of Shibori Blue: Thirty-six Views of The Peak (Redhawk Publications, 2024); Selfie with Cherry (Glass Lyre Press, 2022); Blue Honey, the 2017 Dogfish Head Poetry Prize winner; Transcendental Telemarketer (BlazeVOX, 2012); and Traveling through Glass, the 1999 Bright Hill Press Poetry Book Award winner.

Reviews

I have often wondered if anyone could love the Blue Ridge Mountains as much as someone, like me, who grew up here. In Shibori Blue: Thirty-six Views of The Peak, Beth Copeland reveals her love for the ever-changing physical and spiritual state of The Peak in these stunning photos, coupled with ekphrastic verse—love poems to a mountain.

Poets understand the language of the universe, the ebbs and flows of nature, time, space, and the world in which we live. Few of us are sensitive to this language. Mountains are constant (eternal), humans fleeting. Beth Copeland’s Shibori Blue: Thirty-six Views of The Peak is a masterpiece of poetry.
