American Body: The Solo Show | Guilford

October 12 @ 7:00 pm - October 14 @ 8:30 pm

Join us for an incredible in-person event, American Body: The Solo Show, at the Stephen D. Hyers Theatre in the Greensboro Cultural Center. The premier solo show is written and performed by Deonna Kelli Sayed and directed by Nicole Lungerhausen.

American Body is a seventy-minute show that explores how our bodies impact the way we experience belonging. Through eleven different characters, Deonna Kelli Sayed humorously reveals how size, race, the American diet, and ancestral history intrudes upon our bodies. Deonna revisits her childhood in the Florida Panhandle, wears hijab in the Muslim world, and consults her indigenous Catawba ancestors to reveal the stories of an “imperfect” American physique.

The show is part of Creative Greensboro’s Hyers Residency and is in partnership with The Arts Council of Greater Greensboro.

American Body explores topics like self-doubt and sexual assault through humor and tenderness. The show features occasional profanity. Due to the show’s topics, the performance is inappropriate for audience members under 16 years of age. American Body is approximately 70 minutes long with no intermission. A 10-15 minute moderated audience talk back will be after each performance.
