Nexus Poets’ “First Tuesday“ Nexus Poets Open Mic this month will welcome Featured Poet Chris Abbate.
Following the featured poet’s reading, the mike will be open to other readers. If you want to receive Nexus Poets’ emails including the evening’s Zoom link or be listed to read at the Open Mic, email nexus [at] nexuspoets.com.
Abbate’s full-length collection, Words for Flying, was published by Future Cycle Press in 2022. His first book, Talk About God, was published by Main Street Rag in 2017. Abbate’s poems have appeared in numerous journals including Connecticut River Review, Cider Press Review, and South Florida Poetry Journal. He is a two-time nominee for a Pushcart Prize, has been nominated for a Best of the Net award, and has received awards in the Nazim Hikmet and North Carolina Poetry Society poetry contests. He received honorable mention in the 2022 Susan Laughter Meyers Fellowship and has been selected multiple times for the Poetry in Plain Sight program. Visit him at chrisabbate.com.
Chris’s poetry has received rave reviews, Pushcart Prize winner Paul Hostovsky has this to say about Chris’s poetry: “Why do the best of Chris Abbate’s poems make me cry? Could it be the sadness, vulnerability, and love mixed in with the playfulness of these poems? Or is it simply that voice, finally, of ‘an ache of a boy,’ its honesty, its accessibility, its tenderness, speaking a sort of ‘unspoken language of boys,’ especially to those of us who most needed a voice like Abbate’s back in our own boyhoods, and still sorely need it today? It’s all these things.”
The event is sponsored by Nexus Poets, a group which has promoted poets and poetry in Eastern North Carolina since 2014.
