Drawing from the well of the writer’s life can be a wonderful practice—but at times, it can be a tiring one. What about writing what you don’t know? In this poetry masterclass with award-winning poet Sandra Beasley, we’ll give a close reading to poems with unconventional points of view, ranging from classical myths to historical figures to inanimate objects. We’ll talk about preparatory brainstorming and research that makes a voice convincing, and consider the ethics of writing outside your own identity. An open conversation period will give folks who have already experimented with persona a chance to discuss their experiences. We’ll close with a generative prompt that gets you ready to write your own persona poems.
