Writer, bookseller, and publisher Steve Mitchell is hosting a workshop on how to use media (film, TV, music) as a basis for memoir. Media is an omnipresent part of our lives. Sometimes a snippet of a song or a line from a movie can generate a storm of emotions that makes our memory and our past available in new ways. This workshop will explore ways of generating material for writing memoir and hybrid memoir using cultural touchstones, or nearly forgotten, films and music as an engine.
Essays from Steve Mitchell’s award-winning Mirrorbox series, creative non-fiction which combines film criticism and memoir, have been published in entropy, Harpur Palate, Craft Literary, the North Carolina Literary Review, and elsewhere. His short story collection is The Naming of Ghosts (Press 53), his novel is Cloud Diary (C&R Press). He’s co-owner of Scuppernong Books and General Editor at Scuppernong Editions.
