UNCW: Assistant Professor – Creative Writing/Fiction

The Department of Creative Writing at the University of North Carolina Wilmington is seeking a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Creative Writing/Fiction on a continuing 9-month appointment starting August 2023. Strong credentials in nonfiction strongly preferred. Upon initial appointment, responsibilities will entail teaching a range of creative writing courses including introductory and advanced creative writing workshops, craft-based literature courses, publishing courses, and graduate courses. The Assistant Professor will direct and read MFA and BFA theses, mentor graduate teaching assistants, and serve on departmental committees.All curricula should emphasize diversity. Secondary expertise in US Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) and/or queer literatures will be given preference. The successful candidate will join a department with a strong commitment to diversity and inclusive excellence and will be expected to contribute actively to these efforts. Minimum Education and Experience RequirementsRequirements at rank:
– A terminal degree (MFA, PhD, or equivalent) in Creative Writing or closely related discipline on or by August 2023
– At least one book of fiction of literary merit from a national press
– Additional fiction and nonfiction publications in reputable magazines or anthologies appropriate to rank
– Demonstrated excellence in teaching fiction and nonfiction writing at undergraduate and/or graduate levels
— Interest and/or experience in teaching culturally diverse curricula
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & ExperiencePreference given to candidates with:- Strong credentials in nonfiction, as well as fiction- Secondary expertise in US BIPOC and/or queer literatures- Interest and/or experience in contributing to the leadership of our programs and department
