Affirmation of Welcome

NCWN Trustee Jessica Jacobs is also the founder and executive director of Yetzirah: a hearth for Jewish poetry, a nonprofit with whom the Network has worked.

In response to an alarming rise of antisemitism and Islamophobia over the last two months, including in the literary world, Yetzirah crafted the following Affirmation of Welcome. The NC Writers’ Network is proud to join other literary organizations in sharing this affirmation, and in standing beside our fellow writers of all races and faiths against bigotry, cowardice, and cruelty.

An Affirmation of Welcome

We affirm our desire to welcome writers of all traditions, including Jewish and Muslim, Israeli and Palestinian writers, to our organization, as well as our willingness to fairly consider their work.

As writers, we believe that one of the things that binds us is our ability to confront complex issues with curiosity, nuance, and care. And we are unequivocal in our support of the fact that bigotry against any group–be it Islamophobia, racism, sexism, homophobia, or antisemitism–harms our literary community as a whole.
