Anne Anthony Interviews Junious ‘Jay’ Ward

Junious ‘Jay’ Ward

Among the many wonderful things about the NCWN’s annual conferences are the connections made and conversations started that continue beyond the conference halls. NCWN Member Anne Anthony recently let us all in on one such conversation when she published an interview with Junious ‘Jay’ Ward in Does It Have Pockets, an online literary magazine “with an emphasis on the uncategorizable,” where Anthony is an Art Director and Senior Editor.

Anthony wrote, “While attending the 2023 North Carolina Writers’ Network Fall Conference, I had the good fortune to participate in a poetry workshop, Into The Deep: Writing the Poem That Leaves Us Breathless, led by Junious ‘Jay’ Ward in which he guided his students to discover the heart of what they wished [to] express. It proved to be an incredible experience. Recently, I caught up with Jay to discuss his poetry as well his journey as a poet.”

You can read the interview here to learn more about Ward’s writing, writing influences, literary citizenship, role as the inaugural Poet Laureate of Charlotte, thoughts on social activism and art, and more.

Whether you attended or missed the 2023 Fall Conference, there’s still time to register to join us at our 2024 Spring Conference for a full day of instruction and camaraderie on April 20 at UNC Greensboro.
