They missed more than a few of my favorites, though, almost all of which revolve around Ernest Hemingway, whose gift for alienating people may have exceeded his literary talents.  After their falling out, Gertrude Stein trained her toy poodle to growl when she said, “Play Hemingway – act fierce.”
