Take Action Now

I received this late yesterday from the North Carolina Center for Nonprofits:

“Collectively, nonprofits have lifted our unified voice to protect charitable giving. This week, the N.C. Center for Nonprofits proudly joined with nearly 4,000 nonprofits from across America – including 352 from North Carolina – in urging a Congressional Super Committee to protect and not weaken the charitable giving incentive. We’ve also sent this message to each North Carolina member of Congress.

Now it is time to lift your individual voices. Here are two simple ways you can take today to continue our positive momentum:

  1. Call, email, and/or tweet your Members of Congress (find contact information and key messages here); and
  2. Forward this action alert to anyone you know who cares about the vital work that nonprofits do in our communities, urging them to take action and pass this message along to their board members, staff members, volunteers, donors, friends, and family members!

Here’s some background information:
By November 23, the Super Committee will release its final proposal to reduce the federal deficit by at least $1.2 trillion. The plan is certain to include major cuts in federal funding for nonprofits and to ask nonprofits to provide more services.

Just yesterday, some members of Congress proposed eliminating or reducing the charitable giving incentive as part of the deficit reduction plan. This would hurt all nonprofits by making it harder to donate. This is being proposed while nonprofits that are already stretched beyond capacity are asked to do more with less.

Thanks for your ongoing participation in this campaign and your membership in the N.C. Center for Nonprofits. It’s our responsibility as nonprofits to speak up for the people and communities we serve and care about. If we don’t, we jeopardize our ability to continue to serve them.

Sincerely,

David Heinen
Director of Public Policy and Advocacy”

The North Carolina Writers’ Network has already lost a significant percentage of its state funding, making us more reliant on charitable giving to keep our dues and fees affordable, and make our programs and services available to all North Carolinians.  Please take a moment to contact your representatives and urge them to protect the charitable giving incentive.
